BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF STEVE CLINTON

 

 Personal Background

 

Stephen Michael Clinton was born in 1944 in Wichita, Kansas.  He graduated from Southeast High School in 1962, where he was on the track and swimming teams.  He competed a major in Philosophy at Wichita State University in 1965, and was on the board of the Philosophy Club.  He lettered in weight lifting and track.  Steve worked as a grocery clerk, a gas station manager, a bookeeping clerk for a petroleum accounting firm, and a physical education instructor for handicapped children.  He received his B.A. in Social Science in 1967 from Trinity College, where he also lettered in track and was a student assistant in philosophy.

 

In 1964 Steve married Virginia Ann Schoonover. 

 

 

Virginia is from Enid, OK where she graduated from high school in 1961.  She worked in a bookstore, for the school of education at Wichita State, and for the Institute of Logopedics as an instructor and therapist.  She was president of her sorority, Alpha Phi, was on Motor Board, and is a graduate of Wichita State University in Logopedics and Education, B.A. summa cum laude, 1965.  She received an M.A. in Communication Disorders, summa cum laude, from Northwestern University in 1968.  She earned a Masters in Religion (1981) from the International School of Theology.

 

Ginny taught in a special education program developing individualized instruction for elementary public school children for four years. She also taught education courses and supervised student teachers at Tabor College.  She taught in the wives' program at the International School of Theology.  She was very active in the PTA at various levels, California Association for the Gifted (regional chairman), and is a frequent speaker for Christian Women's Clubs and Christian Business and Professional Women's Councils.  She was chairman of the Deaconness Board in their church.  She and Steve are mentors in the pre-married program at their church.

 

Steve and Ginny have three grown children, Matthew, Michael, and Shanna and a grandson, Nicholas Ryan.

 

General Work Experience

 

From 1961 to 1964 Steve managed two gasoline stations.  In 1964 he served as physical education counselor for a school for the handicapped.  From 1964 to 1965 Steve worked in a metal factory, and in 1968 and 1970 he managed a public swimming pool and taught and oversaw the Red Cross swimming lessons.  He has driven fuel trucks and school buses, started two businesses and two seminaries, and has helped a dozen other businesses and schools get started.

 

Graduate Education

 

In 1969 Steve completed an M.A. in Philosophy of Religion, cum laude.  His thesis was on The Development of James Collins' Methodology in Philosophy of Religion, rom Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

 

In 1970 he received a Master of Divinity in Systematic Theology, cum laude, from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.  While at Trinity, Steve was on the student council for two years in charge of student-faculty relations.  For three years, Steve was a student assistant to Dr. Kenneth Kantzer, Dean of the Seminary, and Dr. John Gerstner, Professor of Church History. He also taught for Dr. Norman Geisler at Trinity College.

 

In 1979 Steve received the Ph.D. in Systematic Theology, summa cum laude, at the California Graduate School of Theology.  His dissertation was on The Doctrine of Salvation in the Calvinist-Arminian Dialogue. 

 

Steve completed an M.A. in Biblical Counseling from the International School of Theology in 1987.  His thesis was on Systematic Theology and Biblical Counseling: Finding a Basis for Integration.  This thesis was published in a slightly revised form in the Journal of Psychology and Theology in January and March of 1990.

 

Steve completed an M.A., summa cum laude, in The Study of the Gifted at California State University in 1988.  His program included a State of California Certificate in Gifted Education.  His thesis included a five year longitudinal study and was titled A Theory of Leadership.  A part of his research was published in the California Associated for the Gifted Communicator in 1985.

 

Steve completed a two years (1982-1984) post-doctoral study in Philosophy at the University of California at Riverside. His major research paper was on The Transcendental Unity of Apperception in Kant.  While at UCR he was on the Graduate Student Council and on the University Educational Policy Committee.

 

He completed the Ph.D. in Education at University of California, Riverside in 1997.  His dissertation research focused on Values and Curriculum Theory.  Steve was a research assistant to Dr. David Post in Educational Policy and to Dr. Irving Hendrick in Curriculum and Instruction.  He was a teaching assistant in the Teacher Credential program in Curriculum and Instruction for Dr. Judith Sandholtz.  He was awarded the prestigious Michaelis Fellowship in Social Studies for the State of California in 1990-91 for his study on Education in the Soviet Union. 

 

Teaching and Academic Administration

 

From 1969 to 1971 Steve taught Philosophy and Bible at Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS.  In 1974 he was a visiting professor at Friends University. 

 

From 1974 to 1982 Steve was the U. S. Director of Campus Crusade's Institute of Biblical Studies. 

 

Steve was Professor of Theology and Philosophy at International School of Theology from 1978 to 1987.  Steve was Provost of the seminary from 1976-1979,  While at the Institute of Biblical Studies and the International School of Theology, Steve taught forty-two different classes (many of them more than once of course), served on thirty-five thesis committees, and produced four video-tape classes (80 hours) and six correspondence classes.  He served on eleven school committees and in 1985-86 was chosen by the students to serve as faculty advisor to the Student Government Association.  He oversaw 90 staff teaching more than 2000 students annually.

 

In 1989-90 he was visiting professor for the year at Talbot Theological Seminary and taught Problems in Contemporary Theology and Theology I (Prolegomena, Theology Proper, Bibliology, and Angeology).

 

Steve taught at the East Asia School of Theology in Singapore, the Nairobe International School of Theology in Kenya, and with the Universidad IberoAmericana de Liderazo in Latin America. He was a plenary speaker at the first three International Convocations on Moral and Spiritual Values for teachers in Russia in 1991. He has taught and consulted in twenty countries on five continents.

 

In 1991 Bill Bright and Steve Douglass asked Steve to move to Orlando to be Director of the new training and educational programs there, including serving as President of The Orlando Institute, the training center at the Headquarters.  In 1992 Dr. Bright also asked Steve to be the Director for the International Christian Leadership University: School of Theology.  Steve served in that capacity until 1997. 

 

Steve has consulted on theological education with seminaries in Korea, Singapore, Latin America, Africa and Russia.  Steve served for three years on the Committee on Distance Education for the 21st Century for the Department of Independent Schools and Colleges for the Florida Department of Education.  He teaches part time at Valencia College (since 1998: humanities, philosophy, education, religion), University of Phoenix (since 2003: philosophy, education, psychology, business), Moody Bible Institute (1999-2001: missions, doctrine, apologetics), Asbury Seminary (2001: Greek), and  Belhaven College (1998: World View and Ethics, in the MBA program) in Orlando.

 

Steve now (since 1991) serves as the President of The Orlando Institute, where he is Professor of Religion, and Philosophy.  He also serves as Director of the International Leadership Council, is on the Board of Directors for Vision Orlando since 2006 serves as Executive Director. 

 

Pastoral Ministry

 

From 1965 to 1968 Steve served as Youth Director for Protestant Youth of the Chapel at Ft. Sheridan, IL Army base. 

From 1967 to 1969 he was Youth Director for Lake Zurich, IL, Evangelical Free Church. 

He was College Director for Central Christian Church, Wichita, KS  1972-73. 

He served as Interim Senior Pastor for Faith Presbyterian Church in Wichita, KS in 1973-74. 

He is ordained in the Evangelical Free Church and was Assistant Pastor of the Highlander Evangelical Free Church, Riverside, CA, for four years (1974-1978).  

Steve served as Coordinator of Counseling Ministries for Community Bible Church from 1981-86. 

He was senior pastor of a new church plant, EAST Community Church, in Orlando from 1992-94.  

Steve was on the Leadership Council at Northland Community Church in 1996-97.  They also both served on the Prayer Team.  From 2001-03  he served as director of training for Northland’s 120 small groups. He and Ginny are on the Pre-Marriage Mentor team and help train Mentors.

 

Steve has served as interim pastor of three other churches (Southern Baptist, Reformed Presbyterian, United Presbyterian), and has preached in over fifty churches in ten denominations.  He has preached and ministered in hospitals, rescue missions, retirement centers, community outreaches, and Campus Crusade for Christ local and area college and lay conferences.  He has spoken at church conferences for all age groups and has guest lectured in high schools and colleges.

 

Campus Crusade for Christ Staff

 

Steve and Ginny joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ in 1971.  He has been a staff member in the Faculty Ministry with responsibility for the Big Eight conference (1971-72),  Campus Director at Wichita State University (1972-74), Director of Biblical Training for Campus Crusade (2000 students and $1million dollars annually, 1974-1984), first Provost of the International School of Theology  (1976-79) and President of Ministry Development, Inc. (1978-83). He served as Director of Curriculum for the International School of Theology (1974-1984), Director of U.S. Extension Programs, including developing the correspondence, video and extension Master's programs (1975-1984), and Director of the Master in Arts in Theological Studies program (1984-1987).  He helped start three of the overseas schools for the Consortium of International Schools of Theology.

 

From 1994-2001 he served as the city coordinator for Campus Crusade field ministries in Orlando.

 

Since 1986 Steve has been Director of the International Leadership Council, a research, teaching and writing group of scholars. 

 

Since 1991 he has been president of The Orlando Institute, the training center and seminary at the headquarters of Campus Crusade.

Community Service

 

He was on the Board of the Center for Individuals with Disabilities for four years (as an appointee from the San Bernardino School Board) and served as chairman 1987-1988.

 

Steve has served on local school PTA's for ten years, including four years as president (1975-1978, 1993-94), and on School Advisory Councils for two schools.

 

He was president of Advocates for Gifted and Talented Education (1978-1984). 

 

He has served at regional and state levels of California Association for the Gifted for five years, and was founding chairman of the State Parent Council (1979). 

 

Steve served on the San Bernardino Unified School District Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education from 1984-1987 and on the review committee on Social Studies Curriculum in 1986.

 

He was Coordinator of Training and Follow-up for Break Free 93  (Orlando City-wide Evangelism Campaign)

 

He was a Junior Achievement consultant working in a local high school with seniors in 1995-96.

 

Steve is a member of the Maitland Chamber of Commerce in his home town and serves on various committees.  From 2002  he has been a member of the board of directors, and in 2006 was President.

 

Steve has served on the board of Vision Orlando since 1992, a group working together to reach Orlando for Christ, and since 2005 is Executive Director.
